Planning for the ISACA Advanced in AI Risk (AAIR) credential means budgeting for more than the exam alone. The exam registration fee is US$459 for ISACA members and US$599 for nonmembers. Candidates who pass pay a separate US$50 application processing fee. That makes the basic one-attempt total US$509 for a member or US$649 for a nonmember, before optional training, study materials, membership dues, or a retake. For credential details, see the ISACA AAIR certification overview.
This guide breaks down the costs that may affect your AAIR budget, explains which charges are optional, and shows how to estimate a realistic total. The amounts below are in U.S. dollars and reflect ISACA’s published AAIR fees as of October 2026. Confirm the prices shown in your ISACA account before registering, since fees can change.
Current AAIR exam fees
ISACA sets the AAIR exam registration price according to membership status when you register. Membership is not required to take the exam: ISACA publishes separate prices for members and nonmembers.
| Candidate status | Exam registration | Application after passing | Basic total |
|---|---|---|---|
| ISACA member | US$459 | US$50 | US$509 |
| ISACA nonmember | US$599 | US$50 | US$649 |
The US$140 difference applies to the exam registration fee. Both candidates pay the same application processing fee after passing. These totals assume one exam attempt and do not include optional preparation products, a workshop, membership dues, or payment-provider charges.
What the basic AAIR certification cost covers
The exam fee pays for one exam registration. It does not include the later application fee or automatically cover every preparation resource listed by ISACA.
To earn the credential, a candidate must hold a qualifying designation, pass the exam, pay the US$50 application processing fee, and follow ISACA’s professional ethics and continuing education policies. The application fee is therefore separate from the exam registration price. Candidates have five years after passing to submit their certification application.
For a first-attempt budget, plan on at least US$509 if you already have ISACA member status or US$649 if you register as a nonmember. That is the basic exam-and-application amount, not a complete estimate for every candidate. Your final spending depends on how you prepare and whether you need another exam attempt.
Should you join ISACA to get the member exam price?
The member exam price is US$140 lower than the nonmember price. If you already hold membership, the comparison is straightforward: the listed exam registration fee is US$459.
If you are not a member, compare the current membership dues with the exam discount before joining only to reduce the AAIR exam fee. Membership dues may vary by membership type and location, and renewal costs may also apply. Since nonmembers can register at the published nonmember price, membership is not an eligibility requirement for the exam.
A useful calculation is:
Potential savings from the exam discount − membership dues = estimated difference
This calculation does not account for other membership benefits or renewal timing. Check the current membership price for your location and type before deciding. The lower exam price alone does not guarantee that joining will reduce your total cost.
Optional study materials and workshop expenses
ISACA lists several AAIR preparation options: an online review course, a questions-and-answers database, a digital review manual, a print review manual, and a virtual workshop. The certification page also offers a free five-question practice quiz. These preparation products are separate choices; candidates do not need to buy every resource to register for the exam.
The AAIR study materials cost depends on the products you select. Check ISACA’s current store listing for the price of the review manual, course, and Q&A database before adding them to your budget. Prices may change, and the materials page does not make every product part of a single standard exam package.
The virtual workshop is a bundled option. ISACA describes enrollment as including the workshop, the eBook version of the review manual, the Q&A database, and the exam cost. Workshop formats and session dates may differ, so review the listing for the specific event. When you compare a workshop package with separate preparation purchases, do not add the exam fee twice if the package already includes it. For a closer look at the overall fees, read this AAIR certification cost breakdown.
Candidates can choose resources based on their preparation needs. Someone comfortable with risk frameworks may want a manual and question database, while a candidate who prefers guided instruction may consider the online course or workshop. The free quiz can help you sample the material, but five questions are not a full-length practice exam or a complete readiness measure.
Retakes and exam eligibility costs
A retake can have the largest effect on the ISACA AAIR total cost. ISACA’s Candidate Guide says candidates must pay the full exam registration fee for each attempt. At the currently published rates, that means US$459 for a member or US$599 for a nonmember each time. Candidates may make up to four attempts in a rolling 12-month period. After the first unsuccessful attempt, the waiting period is 30 days; later retakes require 90-day waits.
Exam eligibility lasts six months from registration. If you need additional time, the candidate guide lists a six-month eligibility extension for US$75. If you fail to schedule and take the exam within the eligibility period, you may forfeit your registration fee. ISACA’s guide also states that exam fees are nonrefundable and nontransferable.
You can reschedule without penalty if you make the change at least 48 hours before your appointment. Within 48 hours, the guide says you must take the exam or forfeit the registration fee. Planning your date around work, travel, and preparation can help prevent an avoidable repeat expense.
A rescore request is an optional cost, not a standard part of certification. The candidate guide lists a US$75 fee for a rescore request and requires submission within 30 days after exam results are released. Include it in your budget only if you plan to request a rescore.
Example budgets for common situations
These examples use ISACA’s listed fees and assume the candidate passes on the final attempt shown. They do not include preparation products, membership dues, currency conversion, or other payment charges.
- Member, passes on first attempt: US$459 exam + US$50 application = US$509
- Nonmember, passes on first attempt: US$599 exam + US$50 application = US$649
- Member, one retake before passing: US$459 + US$459 + US$50 = US$968
- Nonmember, one retake before passing: US$599 + US$599 + US$50 = US$1,248
For a workshop-based plan, use the listed workshop price and verify the included materials and exam. For a self-study plan, add only the products you expect to use. This makes your AAIR certification cost breakdown more accurate than assuming every candidate needs the same preparation package.
Is the AAIR certification worth the cost?
Whether AAIR is worth the cost depends on your current role and the type of responsibility you want to strengthen. ISACA describes the credential as covering AI enterprise governance, AI life cycle risk management, and AI risk program management. It is aimed at experienced professionals with a qualifying designation, rather than beginners entering technology risk for the first time.
Before registering, confirm that your existing credential qualifies, review the exam requirements, and decide how you will prepare. Then compare the member and nonmember exam prices, include the application fee, and leave room for any optional resource or retake. A clear budget makes it easier to decide whether the credential fits your professional plans and financial priorities. For guidance on preparation or your next steps, contact the NYTCC team.
